Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments ArchiMer
Barnes, David K. A.; Galgani, Francois; Thompson, Richard C.; Barlaz, Morton.
One of the most ubiquitous and long-lasting recent changes to the surface of our planet is the accumulation and fragmentation of plastics. Within just a few decades since mass production of plastic products commenced in the 1950s, plastic debris has accumulated in terrestrial environments, in the open ocean, on shorelines of even the most remote islands and in the deep sea. Annual clean-up operations, costing millions of pounds sterling, are now organized in many countries and on every continent. Here we document global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste. While plastics typically constitute approximately 10 per cent of discarded waste, they represent a much greater proportion of the debris accumulating on shorelines. Mega- and...

Bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants in female common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from western European seas: Geographical trends, causal factors and effects on reproduction and mortality ArchiMer
Pierce, G; Santos, M; Murphy, S; Learmonth, J; Zuur, A; Rogan, E; Bustamante, Paco; Caurant, Florence; Lahaye, V; Ridoux, Vincent; Zegers, B; Mets, A; Addink, M; Smeenk, C; Jauniaux, T; Law, R; Dabin, W; Lopez, A; Farre, J; Gonzalez, A; Guerra, A; Garcia Hartmann, M; Reid, R; Moffat, C; Lockyer, C; Boon, J.
Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in blubber of female common dolphins and harbour porpoises from the Atlantic coast of Europe were frequently above the threshold at which effects on reproduction could be expected, in 40% and 47% of cases respectively. This rose to 74% for porpoises from the Southern North Sea. PCB concentrations were also high in southern North Sea fish. The average pregnancy rate recorded in porpoises (42%) in the study area was lower than in the western Atlantic but that in common dolphins (25%) was similar to that of the western Atlantic population. Porpoises that died from disease or parasitic infection had higher concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) than animals dying from other causes. Few of the...

Differential biomagnification of PCB, PBDE, Hg and Radiocesium in the food web of the European hake from the NW Mediterranean ArchiMer
Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Bodiguel, Xavier; Charmasson, Sabine; Loizeau, Veronique; Mellon, Capucine; Tronczynski, Jacek; Cossa, Daniel.
Consumption of marine organisms represents one of the main exposure sources of contaminants for human populations. To obtain a global view of the contamination in commercial fish in the NW Mediterranean Sea, we analysed four types of priority contaminants (PCBs, PBDEs, Hg and Cs-137) in the European hake, Merluccius merluccius, from the Gulf of Lions in relation with organism's trophic level (delta N-15). All contaminants presented a significant increase in concentration in hake muscle with trophic level. However, obvious differences between contaminants were evidenced. Biomagnification factors (BMF and FWMF) along the hake food web were higher for Hg and CB-153 than for BDE-47 and Cs-137, and increase in contaminant concentration with trophic level...

Effets d’une exposition alimentaire chronique à un mélange environnemental de PCB et PBDE sur les traits d’histoire de vie, la bioénergétique et la dynamique des populations de poissons ArchiMer
Horri, Khaled.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a broad group of compounds with varying physicochemical and toxic properties. Among POP, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two families of hydrophobic compounds sharing some similar environmental properties such as hydrophobicity, persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Previous studies have demonstrated that these compounds could affect fish life-history traits such as survival, growth and reproductive success. However, few studies have focused on environmental situations as most previous works investigated the effect of either single congeners, or single families of molecules among POP, or high concentrations, so that results can hardly be transposed to natural...

Les microplastiques en milieu marin : supports de contaminants chimiques - Étude bibliographique ArchiMer
Roclin, Lea.
microplastics are ubiquitous in the marine environment, particularly in ocean gyres. this review makes an assessment of the current knowledge about microplastics as support of chemical contaminants in marine environment. 121 papers were included in this report, with 53 on the theme "microplastics, contaminants and marine environment". adsorption and desorption capacities of contaminants on microplastic depend on the contaminant, the microplastic, and external factors (salinity, organic matter and interaction with other contaminants). regardless of the sampled matrix (water and sand) and the geographical area, results have shown the presence of chemical contaminants on microplastics, which are persistent organic pollutants (pops) in the water (pcbs, pahs,...

Levels and trends of the emerging contaminants HBCDs (hexabromocyclododecanes) and PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) in marine shellfish along French coasts ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Marchand, Philippe; Venisseau, A.; Veyrand, B.; Zendong, Z..
The levels and congener patterns of HBCDs (hexabromocyclododecanes) and PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) were determined in filter-feeding molluscs collected in 2008 and 2010 along the coasts of mainland France. alpha-HBCD and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) were detected in all samples, revealing widespread contamination of the coastal environment by these emerging contaminants. The spatial distribution of Sigma-HBCD concentrations showed higher median levels in samples from the Mediterranean Sea and English Channel respectively, i.e. 0.19 ng g(-1) wet weight (ww) and 0.08 ng g(-1) ww, related to high anthropogenic pressure from urban and industrial activities, while the median concentration was 0.05 ng g(-1) ww in samples from the Atlantic coast. Among...

Organochlorine pesticides residues in commercial milk: a systematic review Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Régo,Isabella Clarissa Vasconcelos; Santos,Greice Nara Viana dos; Santos,Greice Nivea Viana dos; Ribeiro,Joseph Simoes; Lopes,Ruy Bessa; Santos,Soraia Baia dos; Sousa,Alessandra de; Mendes,Rosivaldo de Alcántara; Taketomi,Aliza Thieko Fernandes; Vasconcelos,Arthur Abinader; Taube.,Paulo Sérgio.
Abstract Milk is a very important food for human consumption, mainly due to its content of fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. However, the use of organochlorine pesticides (OCP) for decades has contaminated the soil, water and air, and thus has also contaminated the milk. In this sense, in the present work a review of scientific articles was carried out, between the years 2000 and 2018, related to the evaluation of the degree of contamination of different types of milk by OCPs in different regions of the world. As a result, it was observed that although OCPs have been banned for use in agriculture since the 1980s, these compounds or their metabolites have still been detected in many samples, and in some cases the levels were above the maximum allowed by...
